Projects

Our 10 years anniversary and the International Polar Year IPY 2007-2009 is a perfect opportunity to compile a full programme of events this and the following year. It will be interesting not only for an expert community but also for a broad public, who are eager to learn more about cultural and scientific issues of the “North”.

Spring 2008

"365 days in the open air" — photo exhibition and various other events

In March 2008 a photo exhibition about the life in the North with pictures of the Nenets artist Habecha Yaungad was shown in Vienna. Besides the photo exhibition various other events showing the life of the Nenets people were held. Read details here

Pictures of the North: The Sami community's “traditional” life in contemporary Sweden — a photo exhibition

The exhibition presents the work of our A.A.S. member Kerstin Schröder, an expert on Scandinavia, and her colleague David Bacher, photographer in Paris.

The couple compiled photographs, audio pieces, and texts collected during their recent long-term stay in Laevas near Kiruna in Sweden. On their journey they explored the contradictions the Sami have to cope with in leading an indigenous life in a reindeer economy embedded in the world of the states' majority. Their project will be continued in Norway and the Kola peninsula. See project website: http://www.arctic-cultures.com/
