Gertrude Eilmsteiner-SaxingerPhD. cand. at the University of Vienna (A)Gertrude.Eilmsteiner-Saxinger Since 2004 she holds a diploma in Cultural and Social Anthropology (MA thesis title: Systems of Inequality - Life Plans and Future Perspectives of Students at Moscow Universities). From 1999 on, she received several scholarships and small grants from the University of Vienna for field-trips as well as a joint-study-scholarship in 2002/03 for Russian language studies at the Russian State University RGGU in Moscow. 2000 to 2001 she studied Regional Development and Spatial Planning at the Vienna University of Technology (TU) and took part in a joint project of TU and University of Peshawar, Pakistan on integrated regional development in high-lying regions of Himalaya, Hindukush, Karakorum. Since 2005 she is collaborator with the Institute for Educational and Vocational Research at the Johannes Kepler University Linz (A). Since 2006 she is training students in History of Theory in Social and Cultural Anthropology as tutor to Prof. Andre Gingrich at the Institute for Cultural- und Social Anthropology, University of Vienna. Within a joint lecture of the A.A.S. she presented the topics "Urban Live in Northern Siberia - Spatial Development and Integration" as well as "Migration in Siberia - Ideology, Policy, Needs and Wishes" at the same Institute in January 2008. Current research interests: migration, gender, space, labour, post-socialist countries, Russian Federation with focus on northern Siberia. For her dissertation research on "Labour Migration in North-Western Siberia - the Lives of Vakhtoviki" (supervised by Prof. Peter Schweitzer) she received the Dissertation Award in Migration Studies 2007 of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, ÖAW. Together with Russian historian and A.A.S. member Elena Aleshkevich and Prof. Heinz Fassmann (Department for Geography and Spatial Research at the Universtity of Vienna) as project leader, she currently elaborates a three years research project, looking interdisciplinarily on selected aspects of vakhtovyj metod (fly-in/fly-out shift work) in oil and gas industry in the Former Soviet Union and the Russian Federation. Therein, Gerti and Elena established a cooperation with NII, the Institute for Development of Education under Sub-Polar Conditions of the ural branch of the Russian Academy of Education and the Centre for Socio-Psychological Help, both in Novyj Urengoj, on the purpose of joint surveys on family-life of Vakhtoviki as well as on teenagers growing up with parents working on vakhtovyj metod. Since she met Alla Bolotova and Florian Stammler at their field-sites in Karelia respectively Novyj Urengoj in 2007 she is closely cooperating with their ESF funded project BOREAS MOVE-INOCOMM at the Arctic Centre of the Lapland University in Rovaniemi, Finland: "Assessing senses of place, mobility and viability in industrial northern communities". Since 2001 she published various scientific and journalist articles as well as radio documentaries. Currently she is working on her first monograph "Russia´s young Intelligence" .
